The ants were not happy with us!
We saved the kitchen for last. As I was pulling up the tile flooring in there, I found that we had a bit of an ant problem. They were everywhere! Under the floor, inside all the kitchen cabinetry, and marching underneath the floor. Lord knows what is happening underneath this thing. We’ll find that out later when we pull off the belly pan. Andy laughs at me, because he knows how much I can’t stand ants… especially in our home. Ok, I actually kind of panic. I don’t like to share my home with ants. He always just tells me that “there are 1.6 million ants per person in the world. We’re surrounded by them.” I’m fine with those facts, but they can stay outside. I promise, I’m a lot of fun to go camping with ; )
After a lot of ant spray and cleaning up the floor, we were back to disassembling everything. We were somewhat careful taking everything out, because we were not sure what structures we were going to keep and what we were going to toss. This whole process was all so new to us, so we did end up keeping a lot more than we ended up using in the end. We had a nice pile of 1970’s Airstream parts in our basement for a long time. You’ll see in our future posts that we ended up re-using the refrigerator and painting the face of it. We also kept the oven range, but ended up purchasing a new one.
Once everything was out, we had an open floor plan. What to do next? For a brief moment, we contemplated just scrubbing, sanding, and re-painting the walls in place, replacing the bad flooring in the back, and re-building from there. That would have been taking the easy road, but that is not what we ended up doing. We needed to see what all was going on behind those walls. So, that was our next step.
